# Keys

Use the `keys` operator to return map keys or array indices.
|
|
## Map keys
|
|
Given a sample.yml file of:
|
|
```yaml
|
|
dog: woof
|
|
cat: meow
|
|
```
|
|
then
|
|
```bash
|
|
yq eval 'keys' sample.yml
|
|
```
|
|
will output
|
|
```yaml
|
|
- dog
|
|
- cat
|
|
```
